How to Turn Sticker Designs into Fridge Magnets
By Sticker Flux ·
Printable magnetic sheets let any sticker design live on the fridge instead of paper. The sheets feed through many home inkjet printers much like sticker paper, and the result is a flexible magnet you cut to shape. A few adjustments to your design and printing routine make the difference between a flimsy novelty and a magnet that actually holds.
Check your printer and buy the right sheets
Magnetic sheets are made for either inkjet or laser printers, and the two are not interchangeable — check the pack against your printer before buying. Inkjet sheets are the common choice at home. Feed one sheet at a time through the manual tray if your printer has one, since magnetic sheets are thicker and heavier than paper.
Let the print dry fully before touching it; ink sits on the coated surface longer than on plain paper. As with sticker paper, our guide to sticker paper types explains how coatings affect drying and colour, and the same patience applies here.
Design for the magnet format
Magnets are usually small and viewed from across the kitchen, so bold shapes and high contrast beat fine detail. A single strong subject — a piece of fruit, a pet's face, a short word — reads better than a busy scene. Leave a clear margin around each design so cutting does not clip the artwork.
Remember the magnet's job: holding paper. Thin sheets hold a single sheet of paper comfortably but not a stack of drawings, so keep expectations modest. Designs made in the [Sticker Flux sticker design app](/) print at high resolution, which suits the small, crisp format well.
Cut cleanly and care for the finish
Sharp scissors or a craft knife and ruler cut magnetic sheet easily. Rounded corners resist peeling and feel nicer in the hand than sharp points. If you want a shaped magnet, cut just outside the artwork's edge so a thin border of the printed background frames it.
Wipe magnets with a dry or barely damp cloth rather than soaking them, and keep them flat when not on the fridge so they do not curl. If you enjoy the format, the same artwork can become stickers too — the Sticker Flux custom sticker maker produces designs that work across both, and our guide on printing stickers at home covers the sticker side.
