How to Make Clear Stickers and Transparent Stickers

By Sticker Flux ·

Clear stickers let the surface show through around the artwork, so the design looks almost painted on. Here is how to make transparent stickers that look crisp instead of faded.

When clear stickers work best

Transparent stickers shine on glass, light-colored laptops, white notebooks, and jars. Because most home printers do not print white ink, any white in your design becomes see-through. That means designs with dark outlines, saturated colors, and bold shapes work best, while pale pastels and white details can disappear on a clear sticker.

Line art, lettering, botanical drawings, and simple icons are perfect for clear sticker paper. Avoid placing them on dark surfaces, where the colors will look muddy. If you want a white border around the art on a dark surface, a standard white sticker or vinyl is a better choice. Note that [Sticker Flux](/) downloads retain their illustrated scene and printable border, not a transparent background. They are better suited to an opaque sticker than a floating clear-film silhouette. Home printers usually cannot print opaque white ink on clear stock.

Printing on transparent sticker paper

Buy clear sticker paper made for your printer type, inkjet or laser, because using the wrong kind can smear or melt. Print on the correct side, usually the slightly rougher coated side, and select a transparency or glossy setting. Let inkjet prints dry longer than usual, since ink sits on top of the film.

A clear laminate over the print protects the ink and evens out the shine. Test a small sample first to check color density; you may want to boost saturation slightly in your design so it looks rich instead of washed out once it is on a window or bottle.

Cutting and applying clear stickers

Clear stickers are forgiving to cut because small margins around the art are nearly invisible. Leave a thin edge rather than cutting right to the ink line, which keeps the sticker from peeling. Rounded corners hold better than sharp points.

Apply to a clean, dry, smooth surface and use a card to push out every bubble, since trapped air is more visible through clear film. On glass, a tiny spray of soapy water lets you reposition before the adhesive grabs, then squeegee it out and let it dry.
